AI governance control plane vs DLP

DLP, CASB and SASE products are data-centric controls on the network and endpoint, and they are good at blocking known data patterns wherever they appear. An AI governance control plane knows what an agent is, who owns it and which limit applies to it, so it complements DLP rather than replacing it.

Definition

AI governance control plane
One place that knows every agent in the company, who owns it and what it is allowed to do, and keeps the audit trail. Lustena is an AI governance control plane.

Definition

DLP, CASB and SASE
Data-centric controls on the network and endpoint, such as Microsoft Purview, Netskope and Zscaler, that find and block sensitive data patterns as data moves.

When to pick each

AI governance control plane or DLP, CASB, SASE

Pick it when

AI governance control plane

You need to answer which agents exist, who owns each one, what each is allowed to do, and prove it to an auditor.

DLP, CASB, SASE

You need to stop sensitive data patterns leaving through email, web, endpoint and cloud, AI included.

Governance

AI governance control plane

Versioned limits per agent in six dimensions: tools, MCP servers, hosts, data classes, autonomy and schedule.

DLP, CASB, SASE

Policies per data pattern, user and destination. They do not know what an agent is, who owns it or which limit applies.

Security

AI governance control plane

Twelve data classes classified on the device with content-free findings attributed to an agent and a session; red-team scans of your own agents.

DLP, CASB, SASE

Mature pattern matching and blocking across the whole data estate.

Observability

AI governance control plane

Sessions per app, team and agent, one audit trail and evidence packages for GDPR, EU AI Act, ISO/IEC 42001, NIST AI RMF, AIUC-1 and LGPD.

DLP, CASB, SASE

Incidents per data event, user and destination.

Deployment

AI governance control plane

A browser extension by policy, a Python SDK and an MCP server, next to the DLP you already run.

DLP, CASB, SASE

Network, endpoint and cloud deployment across the company.

Capability matrix

Side by side

DLP, CASB and SASE capabilities describe the category as a whole, drawn from public documentation for products such as Microsoft Purview, Netskope and Zscaler as of October 2026; individual products vary. We build Lustena, so read us as an interested party.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an AI governance control plane and DLP?

DLP is data-centric: it recognizes sensitive patterns and blocks them as data moves. An AI governance control plane is agent-centric: it knows every agent, who owns it and what it is allowed to do, and attributes each finding to an agent and a session.

When is DLP the better choice?

When the problem is data leaving through every channel, not only AI. DLP, CASB and SASE cover email, web, endpoint and cloud, and that breadth is something a control plane does not try to match.

Does Lustena replace our DLP?

No. Lustena complements it. DLP keeps blocking data patterns across the company; Lustena adds the agent layer DLP does not have: inventory, owners, per-agent limits and evidence.

Does Lustena send prompt content to the cloud?

No, not by default. Classification runs on the device and only categories, counts, destinations, channels and HMAC fingerprints leave it. Opt-in redacted capture is an Enterprise plan feature.

Which data classes does Lustena recognize?

Twelve, classified on the device, including email addresses, payment cards, API keys, JWTs, private keys and national formats such as Brazil's CPF and CNPJ, and Brazilian phone numbers. On the Enterprise plan you can warn, block or redact per data class.
